Formaldehyde is one of the most widely used building blocks in the chemical industry. It goes into the resins that hold together furniture boards and plywood, the engineering plastics in car parts, the coatings on your walls, and a long list of agrochemical and pharmaceutical intermediates. This guide explains what formaldehyde is, the grades that industry buys, where it is used, and what to look for in a reliable supply partner.
What is formaldehyde?
Formaldehyde (chemical formula CH2O, CAS No. 50-00-0) is the simplest aldehyde. At room temperature it is a colourless gas with a sharp smell, so it is almost always sold and transported as an aqueous solution, often called formalin. Small amounts of methanol are usually added as a stabiliser to stop the formaldehyde from polymerising into solid paraformaldehyde during storage.
Commercially, formaldehyde is produced by the catalytic oxidation of methanol with air. The two main routes are the silver-catalyst process and the metal-oxide (iron-molybdenum) process. In both, the formaldehyde gas leaving the reactor is absorbed in water to give a solution of the required strength.
Common grades of formaldehyde
Formaldehyde solutions are specified mainly by their formaldehyde concentration and their methanol content:
- 37{39499548087bf5d6456720590ab548a06fd15c0472d9a38a1fcaa1e4add42826} formaldehyde solution is the classic “formalin” grade and the most widely traded strength.
- Higher-strength solutions (up to about 50{39499548087bf5d6456720590ab548a06fd15c0472d9a38a1fcaa1e4add42826}) carry more formaldehyde and less water per tonne, which suits resin producers who want higher solids and lower freight costs.
- Low-methanol and stabilised grades are chosen to match the process. Lower-methanol solutions need temperature-controlled storage to prevent paraformaldehyde from precipitating.
Beyond concentration, buyers typically check methanol, formic acid (acidity) and iron content on the certificate of analysis, because these affect resin quality and downstream reactions.
Where formaldehyde is used
1. Resins and adhesives
The largest share of formaldehyde goes into thermosetting resins: urea formaldehyde (UF), melamine formaldehyde (MF) and phenol formaldehyde (PF). These resins bond particleboard, MDF and plywood, and are used in decorative laminates, moulding compounds and coatings.
2. Engineering plastics and polyurethanes
Formaldehyde is the raw material for polyoxymethylene (POM, also called acetal), a strong, low-friction plastic used in gears, fasteners and automotive parts. It is also used to make MDI, a key component of polyurethane foams and elastomers.
3. Chemical intermediates
Pentaerythritol for alkyd paints and coatings, hexamine, trimethylolpropane and many speciality chemicals all start from formaldehyde.
4. Agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and other uses
Formaldehyde is used in the synthesis of several crop-protection chemicals and pharmaceutical intermediates, in textile finishing, and in preservation and disinfection applications.
Safe handling at a glance
Formaldehyde is a hazardous substance. It is irritating to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract, can cause skin sensitisation, and is classified by the IARC as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1). It should be handled with good ventilation and appropriate personal protective equipment, and stored and transported in suitable, clearly labelled containers. Always follow the supplier’s Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and your local regulations.
Choosing a formaldehyde supplier
For manufacturers, a reliable formaldehyde supply matters as much as price. When evaluating a supplier, look for:
- Consistent quality: stable concentration and impurity levels from batch to batch, backed by a certificate of analysis.
- The right grade and packaging: bulk tankers for continuous resin plants, drums or IBCs for smaller users.
- Capacity and logistics: enough production to cover your demand, and dependable delivery schedules.
- Certified management systems: quality and environmental certifications show that processes are controlled and audited.
